Sand play therapy for a child with school refusal with signs of seperation anxiety

Abstract
This paper reports on the therapeutic approaches through sand play therapy with a schoolgirl with school refusal, and the effects on school refusal by seperation anxiety. Psychodynamically, school refusal by seperation anxiety is interpreted as unstale mother child relationship. in this case, school refusal also showed by her mother conflicts and anxiety with her grandfather. Therapy was initiated in conjunction with cognitive behavioral play approach since we aim to return to school early. initially, she was emotionally unstable, showing sings of seperation anxiety in therapy, but she liked sand play. She was good at expressing her feelings, so we used sand play approach. She became able to express her feeling of fear and anxiety by sand play, and attend to school with her mother by cognitive behavioral play approach, which gradually lessened the degree of her seperation anxiety. Through these approaches, she able to express her feelings, thus enabling her to stabilize her emotions and become to attend to school by herself.
